This week I focused on making my shops hanging sign. I was nervous about uving and texturing since I still felt quite unsure about it so thought I'd create my sign and use it as my practice for the two. I tried to create quite a classic metal fixture and I used tori for the chain but decreased the subdivisions to be more conscious of the poly count. I am aware that it would be unlikely to use this technique in game however for this project I thought it would be most effective.

I then started uving my sign which at the start was a real challenge and it took me a few attempts to start getting things right. Most of the beginning of this week was taken up with trial and error with uving, for example I learned that not having a stretched texture is more important that having all the seams connected. I watched a few tutorials and found these helped alot in learning the best ways to do some specific shapes. I tried to make my uving as clean as possible and took my time with it so I could get the lease amount of stretching and the best seams. I then organised my layout to make best use of the space and was conscious that sing the actual sign piece is the most important it should be the biggest piece.

I then created a high poly version of my sign. I added edge loops in the places where I wanted to maintain more of an edge and then I used the smooth tool on the whole asset. I didn't want to make it too smooth so added quite a few edge loops.

I started attempting using substance painter to texture my sign, I realised I had forgot a step in Maya or assigning a different material to each of the two different parts, the metal and the wood.
